Case study

Legacy spare parts for a classic car restoration programme

Recreating unobtainable trim and structural parts for a restoration programme by scanning original components and rebuilding them as editable CAD.

The problem

A restoration programme needed trim and structural parts that had been out of production for decades. No drawings survived, and the only references were worn originals on the vehicle.

What we did

  • Scanned the original components at up to 0.02 mm precision, capturing the geometry as it actually was rather than as it was designed.
  • Rebuilt the parts as parametric CAD, reconstructing the distorted areas so the new parts would fit a correct vehicle rather than a worn one.
  • Produced EPDM compression molded parts for the rubber items and fabricated sheet metal parts for the structural items.
  • Archived the digital models so the programme can reorder without rescanning.

Result

Parts unavailable for decades are back in production, and the client now owns a digital archive of the vehicle's geometry.
